A friend of mine started travelling, so she created a blog here for friends and family to read. I thought it sounded interesting to write here, so here I go...
I don't know where to find blogs I want to follow, but perhaps I didn't try too hard.. if anyone can answer my noob questions, please feel free to do so!
The whole concept of blogs is really interesting, considering the world of news and media today. I still find it suspicious when the news start reading from websites and quoting blogs. Soo you can't do your own research? It looks amateurish and frankly, a bit silly.
What happened to the news? Is it because of the media development, what with tablets and smartphones making Internet more accessable - I would have thought that would have caused the opposite effect, making the quality and content better. But not really..and that is kind of sad.
I think that is part of the reason why Aaron Sorkin chose the TV news as his new project in his latest drama series, "Newsroom" and that is also why I'm so excited about it. It deals with how the news are represented in the US (something that reflects on the rest of the world) in the midst of a close-knit work place where relationships are fraught with personal issues; a combination that appeals to be.
The first episode really grabbed me with this loaded question; "what makes America the greatest country in the world?" To which our main character, Will answered;
"Just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day,
there's some things you should know, and one of them is, there's
absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest
country in the world.
We're 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in
science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in
median household income, number 4 in labor force, and number 4 in
exports. We lead the world in only 3 categories: number of incarcerated
citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and
defense spending, where we spend more than the next 26 countries
combined. 25 of whom are allies.
Now, none of this is the fault of a 20
year old college student. But you, nonetheless, are without a doubt a
member of the worst period generation period ever period. So when you
ask, "what makes us the greatest country in the world?" I don't know
what the fuck you're talking about. (...)"
How can you not love that?
